The Association

The group started in 1996 with the purpose of working together to improve the area on a social, cultural and enterprise level. It deals with local concerns in the two valleys and is open to all residents. The main assets it identified are the beautiful landscape and the history of the area.

In November 1998 the group produced a book on the area ‘Hidden Gold: a History of the Coomhola and Borlin Valleys’. Hidden Gold documents the traditions of the locality and is also useful as a guide to the area. (Extracts will be published on this site soon)

The group has worked to improve the state of the roads and has made good progress to date. The group has worked with Cork County Council  to eliminate some dangerous bends in the area.

The group instigated a survey on waste 3 years ago which culminated in a comprehensive waste collection service by Beara Waste.

The group is also working with Bantry Integrated Development Group to undertake an area survey which will help shape the future development of the two valleys. Details will be posted here shortly.

With the support of FÁS the Killeen (graveyard) in the Coomhola valley has had access improved and a dry stonewall built around the boundaries.

As well as the continuation of existing projects the group will be involved in future projects:

Signposts
Townland Signs
Development of rural walks
Agri-tourism
Amenity areas-picnic tables & chairs
